Under California's three strikes law, a
person convicted of a third felony may be handed a mandatory life
prison term. California's rationale for implementing this law is based
on putting habitual offenders behind bars for life, or a sufficiently
lengthy period of time to effectively remove them from society forever.
Supporters of the three strikes law point to public safety as their
primary concern. What they don't take into consideration, though, is
the devastation it causes for individuals and families who lose someone
to a prison sentence for making just three mistakes over the course of
their adult life.
